Fig Tree #3

Santa Barbara has a huge famous fig tree near the train station (famous for Santa Barbara, anyway). After all the years of living here, I finally wandered down there with the camera on a gloomy morning this past weekend. The root system is enormous. The roots in the image are about 18 inches tall, maybe more.

Nikon D810, 70-200mm

Here I was wondering where in Utah this snaky formation was...sad  This is wonderfully sinuous with great details, Harley.  Terrific use of an overcast to really show off the details.

This root system is amazing, Harley. Has an eerie look and feel to it like giant anacondas searching for a meal. I think the B&W and subdued light on this day is excellent. It almost looks a bit like some kind of concrete serpentine wall.........frown

Well, I'm glad you finally wandered down there with a camera.  Sweet B/W  and very snake like.  I like it alot.

Your choice of B/W?  Love it.

I like the depth and the texture on the roots - only B&W could give you the latter, I think. The composition also hints at the large size of what is not seen. Nicely done.

Very impressive, nice details and the perfect shot for B&W. Never I would think that it was a root system, I can see why it's so famous. Your picture brings up this impressive feeling very well.

This is a very nice abstract. It works really well as a B&W. I could see this blown up big and hanging on a wall.

Fine composition Harley. Reminds me of a Weston I once saw. Love the suggested mystery in the darker areas. But it's mostly about intriguing shapes for me. The pie slice in the urc draws the eye a little bit.

I once camped overnight under this tree in my VW bus over 40 years. The canopy was just enormous. Left a big impression for many years.

Nice job. Definitely has the feel of a Weston.

This is really cool. Nice work with the b&w too. I agree the bigger the better for this one.

If this tree is famous, then making an image of it makes you a papparazzi?! I googled a bit on this tree, and it indeed looks very big. And it really looks like one of those jungle trees, despite it standing in a city. B+W works very well as well for this scene. Sometimes nice subjects are closer by than we would expect!

You nailed this one Harley.  I saw that tree years ago.  Your take reminds me of Edward Weston—without the veggies of course.  Great shot.
