After many tries, I've finally got an image of Yellowstone's Blacktail plateau that I like. I've stopped and shot under a wide variety of conditions here and never thought much of the results. This was taken a month ago late on a day with a clearing storm and while the spring greens and bison in the foreground help, I'm inclined to think that it's the sky that holds this together. What about you? (5D3, 70 - 200 f2.8 @ 70mm, 1/125s, f/14, iso 200, tripod and polarizer)

10 commentsI agree with you about the sky but think the way everything flows toward the tallest mountains, especially the bison and clouds, really makes this an excellent photo. Persistence really is rewarding. Smallest of nits: a little, dark, spotty cloud above the tallest snow cap kind of draws attention.
Yep, you got it quite nicely. Your persistence paid off. I might consider bringing down the midtones a bit? Also, I think this also work beautifully in B&W, a classic B&W landscape. But it works equally well in color.
I agree, the clouds "steal the show", but the light on the foregorund meadows holds the attention very well too.
I am sure that everytime you shot this place it was very nice but probably this time everything that you like was in place to give this beautiful picture. Amazing sky that goes with the snow of the mountains and as bonus, the bisons in the prairie. In fact, this amazing sky is there to put all together every aspect of the scene. Very nice work, I love it.
Really nice, Mark. Makes me long for the high country. I have finally been doing this photography thing long enough to realize that there are certain times of the year better than others and the right light and conditions can really make or break an image. Perhaps just becoming more patient with age makes the difference. I like the image alot. It is the quintesential Yellowstone/Montana landscape. Great sky and all the rest of the elements combine for great look at this country.
Very nice scene, Mark. Glad it all came together for you on this outing. Obviously the clouds are a bit unique in structure, variety and overall placements in this scene. I really like the fact for all the bright white you did not lose any to being blown out.......excellent..
This is just a beautiful image. I like the entire image. Yes the clouds are dramatic, but the light and all the interest in the foreground hold the eye very well.
Mark, This is one beautiful image...Great work! The large version is a treat. Not a suggestion from me as it looks great as is. Maybe you should just print it big and sell a bunch!

The sky is indeed very nice, but I like the look of the land as well. It has a clarity that I find really attractive. Perseverence pays off once again!
This really comes to life in the LP Mark, what a gorgeous sky!
Love the bison down front, and the meadow itself is simply beautiful in this light
