The Santa Barbara coastal fog was once again pulled in when I hiked in the mountains early Saturday morning. On my hike back down, it was starting to pull out of the coastal plain below me, but was still quite heavy looking down toward Ventura.

12 commentsI like the comp, and the mist among the hills looks really great, but I think I probably would like to see a bit more detail in the darkest parts.
This is a fine moody, layered view, Harley. The bright fog balances nicely with the dark ridges and distant peaks. Isn't that Oly a bit light for a LF person?
Like this a lot, Harley. I am sure glad you started packing a camera on your walks with Maggie. The fore ridges fan out perfectly to introduce the fog bank. Nice atmospherics add nicely to this image.
This looks great, Harley. Excellent tones in this and I really enjoy the conditions you captured here. Excellent comp with wonderful layers. Looks like this would be great as a print!!

Harley, to me your usage of the light weight mirrorless unit for an outing such as this is a perfect match. Needless to say, the outcome was super too. Although the atmospheric conditions worked in your favor, blocking out urban sprawl, the composition is what I really like here. As we know from experience it takes being out there to take advantage of the overall opportunities, it's not done from the sofa. Well done......
The old saw about the secret to photography being "F16 and being there" holds true even today, especially the part about being there! One heads out senses atune to discover the changing world!
Thanks for shaing! Tom
Wonderful layers. The comp with these diagonals wor exceedinlgy well. The "internal" contrast of the light (1/4 tone) and dark (3/4 tone) elements feels a bit flat, especially in the larger image. Global contrast though feels about right.
I think the view is spectacular. A little lack of contract within the dark tones. The 2nd ridge top looks a little funky - too dark along the top of the ridge. Maybe due to some localized dodge and burning? Not consistant with the other ridges. The far left ridge also seems to suffer from an unusually dark area as well.
Absolutely love this, Harley! The fog creates so much depth and atmosphere!
The sea of clouds creates a beautiful atmosphere inside a very well balanced composition with all those lines decreasing for 45 deg to the flat ones in the background. I like it a lot.
You held the whites just right here for me and I like the toning a lot....
Nice shapes and tonal values, Mr. H.. This works for me!
