'Petal Peeper'

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted July 21, 2015150 views9 comments

First shot of a Texas Giant this summer, this one's in pristine condition.

I used this title because the swallowtail B-fly seems to be peeking around the petal edge at me..

F/11, 1/1600th, ISO 640, 5DM2, 300mm f/2.8 + 2x ext. with light fill around noon, monopod for support.

Cropped to 4579x3663 - Clear, sunny, and hot, hot, hot!angry

Howard - I'll not say "it won't get much better than this" yet. You can really surprise us (yet again).

What a big Texas Giant...eh?......Howard. From this POV the wingspan looks to be huge. Excellent composition, colors, and as always perfect DOF for this type of scene.....devil

A terrific image of a pristine butterfly, Howard.  The details in the bf are great, I can count the scales in the wings on the larger version.  This one is a beauty, but it does take the larger view to open up.  The normal version is distinctly darker than the larger version and that makes the larger version much better viewing.

Sounds like a Texas summer forecast. Here it is hot and humid, afternoon and evening thundershowers, high in the upper 90's. If it wasn't for hurricanes, the weather forecasters could just take the summer off! Beautiful Swallowtail, Howard. I really admire (and envy) the fine texture and detail! The slight POV difference from head on to actually below is a real plus. So is the soft background the long lens +TC gives you.devil

What a beauty, Howard! The butterflies I see are much smaller and always beat up.  The wings on this Giant ST are really impressive. Well composed and captured all around, and I like the way the little bits of orangish-red on the wings exactly match the zinnia. laughdevil

This is the type of photo, that someone as new to this as I am, can only aspire to take. It's amazing and gorgeous, and all the great things others have said :-)
