I've been to the southwest numerous times, but this past May was the wettest I have ever experienced. This was taken on my fifth trip to Great Sand Dunes. Normally I am drawn to more abstract compositions, but I liked the textures and colors of the dunes that seemed to have been recently soaked by rain, and left the sky and FG in for context.

8 commentsPretty enough, but I think this has real possibilities for B/W if you worked the contrast in the dunes a lot more, then converted with a good B/W conversion like NIK Silver Efex.
Love the textures in these wet dunes, Bill. Even though I like the inclusion of the foreground and sky, I have to believe you have some outstanding images of the dunes in abstract. I know that rain tends to mute the texture somewhat, but it also adds a texture all it's own. Never been to the these dunes but I plan on it one of these days. Nice work.
This is great as is, but I actually think you would get a stunning abstract by excluding the land and sky. The lines and patterns in the sand are really mesmerizing!
The creamy texture and color of the dunes is very nice. Just the right amount of foreground for context too.
This has a nice effect with the foreground and sky, and I too like context, but maybe some selective contrast in the dunes themselves would give them more presence in the image? I'll take a look at the abstract in the other thread too.
Agree that I would naturally be exploring just the dunes for abstract compositions in this environment and that some additional contrast would be an improvement perhaps. Some of the dunes almost look like they have tire tracks on them... that's just an effect from the heavy rain I assume?
I like this version best. The layering, shapes, and contrast really come through nicely in this one.
I love the textures in the dunes and the softer contrast. I'm on the fence with the foreground, though.
I agree that this has more ways to express to itself, so that might be worth exploring.
