While on our way out from the marina on the Saco River we came across this Great Black-backed Gull with his catch. The gull was atop the getty with his fish as we passed by and I was able to snap off a series of shots as he began to consume his meal.

18 commentsI have seen seagulls swallow large fish, but I expect this flounder was too large to swallow whole. The placement of the seagull and its catch and the very nice background make this a very nice image.
Actually, he did. I'll post a few more from the sequence in the next post.
Alright! Can't wait to see later photos. I did see a gull swallow a whole eel, so I shouldn't have been surprised about the flounder.
For those interested I posted the entire sequence in the Bird Photography Forum.
Hi Chuck, you could say - 'you were in the right 'plaice, at the right time.'
Looks a little flat just check the Histogram, it may need to come in on the RHS?
Just waiting to pick up a very small boat to head up way, way north so will catch up on my return, all the best.

An amazing pose and waiting to see the rest in the series
Amazing what they can swallow. you've captured this at just the right moment. graham
Excellent shot Chuck, nice catch for the bird and you. Ray
The halibut looks a bit too wide to go down, but the series you posted in the Bird Photography Forum puts that to rest
Excellent work Charles
Excellent, Chuck. Lovely detail and that elevated rock and low angle made for a great bg.
Nice, simple but effective image. Enjoyed the sequence in the bird forum. How do they do this??!!
Wgat a great capture! I wish the background had more to offer though - maybe you can punch up the color a touch?
I saw the complete series in your forum posting and it is awesome. This would be like one of us attempting to swallow an entire 9 inch whole pizza. Well done with no nits

how big that fish is. Nice image.
Now thats a mouthful !
Flounder? The right time and the right Plaice!
What an excellent capture, Chuck. The content, composition and image quality are all very appealing. The photo narrative on the Forum is sensational. Well done.

Very unique image Chuck. Very well presented and no nits from me. Gulls actually crack me up and I don't think people give them enough attention with the lens. This actually reminds me a little of a series I have of a gull trying to eat a starfish...he wasn't successful though like your gull. Also, the series you posted on the Bird Photography Forum is terrific.
What a great catch for both you and the bird Chuck, love your comp and the position of the flounder here.
