Although this was taken a few days ago at around 5pm, the sun was already going down below the trees and hill to the west (we live on an east facing slope in the forest). The bird was half in and half out of the direct light. Had to do a few adjustments to bring it more in line. I like the effect with the light favoring the bird's upper body and the transition to a bit darker, though I am sure this won't appeal to everyone. This species has been much more common around here this year for some reason. D800e, 300f4, 1.4tc, f7.1, 1/800, ISO 800. Would love to know how people feel about this one.

I think you did an excellent job managing this light, detail looks great
A very nice spot light effect you captured here Jim
Hi Jim,
You did well with what nature gave you. You might try to remove a little of the blue cast in the shadow if you so desire. The head has some excellent detail including the blacks...............................Jim
When looking the initial image it looked like I was not going to enjoy the image as much I did when looking to the larger version. Really nice effect with the light hitting only part of the body. Nice image.
Nice detail and beautiful light on the Woodpecker. Ray
Jim: the photo has to be seen large to be appreciated. I like the effect of the bird appearing to rise out of shadow into the light. The details and exposure in the lit portion are spot on. Very nicely done overall. Richard
I like the lighting, Jim. and the perch is really cool. Nice head turn from the woodpecker.
No problems with the lighting for me, it is natural!
So many would have been tempted to reach for fill flash in a situation like this resulting in a totally unnatural image.
Very nice shot of a bird that I see frequently here in the Northeast. I like the half in-half out look, but I think I'd try removing the blue cast on the darker portion of the bird Jim, particularly the feet.
Thanks very much for all the thoughtful comments. Jim Z. and Charles, I have removed the blue cast from my copy here at home. Thanks for pointing it out!
