I recently returned from exploring the the Southern Coast of Iceland with a brief stop in the Highlands. I fell in love with the Rhyolite mountains - with their colors, curves, and snowfields. In addition to finding suitable lighting, I found distilling a view into a tight, cohesive composition to be the most challenging asspect as these colorful hills were all around. The recent winter was a heavy one, so more snow than I expected. Deeper rivers to cross, and more snowfields to hike through but a bit more solitude as well. I expect many memorable images from my short stint in this part of the country.

18 commentsHarry, the colors and textures here are awesome. Easy to see why you fell in love.
Wowwwwwwwww............this is awsome, Harry. Love everything about it. An almost dreamy quality to this image. Man, what a beautiful location. I must admit that I'd love to see this in B/W, but I'm glad I got to see it all. BTW, congrats on your selection in the Outdoor Photographer B/W issue.
Stunning has the feel of an oil painting, the coulours are fantastic !
Wow. I really like this image. A wild design of colors and patterns. Very artsy. I can see why you had difficulty settling on a composition. They are everywhere. The mountain on the right center looks like a great subject as well. The only minor issue I see is that the top mist is slightly affecting the overall design. Cropping it out breaks down the "wholeness" of the image. I wonder if there's any way to darken it to match the overall tone of the image. Gosh I'd like to go there some day. You must had quite a climb to reach this vantage point. Very fine image.
Thanks for the comments.
Gary - BW versions definately a possibility, just not sure which one I will try it on. Hard to compete with the colors. Thanks re OP. Just wish it were larger in print, but great that it will be viewed by a large audience.
Igor - This image was taken from a plane, so no climbing involved. But composing while on the move and the changing tonal values made it more challenging. I do see your point and will try darkening it a bit. Also looks a bit too blue online, so I may try to address that as well. After hiking in the area, I determined I was getting as good if not better images from those vantage points and composing was a lot easier, and less expensive!
I've adjusted the top edge area a little - less blue and darkened slightly. Seems to be a little better balance in my view.
What an amazing image Harry. The repost definitley works better for me. This aso hassome otherworldly qualities in color. It may loose that in B&W.
The repost is better for me and I can see this going a bit darker still... Amazing view and nice "on the fly" comp.
Reminds me of a Bev Doolittle water color. Made me look for hidden images. This is spectacular. Hopefully, we will be graced with some more of your "memorable images" of Iceland. Thank you for sharing this one.
Well, I thought the intitial post looked really darn nice, but...
The re-post is awesome!
I really like the patterns, the textures and the sense of light. No nits, here.

This is really nice, Harry. Looking forward to seeing your trip in pictures.
Repost works better for me too. This is spectacular, and the light, overall effect with the top darkened gives it a universal kind of glow.
The repost kills! Such a fine abstract of a great place. Would certainly be a nice B+W, but I really think the subtle colors add a lot to this one.
The colors, textures, and formations here really work well here Harry. Having been to Iceland recently, I really appreciate what you have done with this image. The snowmelt and glacial coloration to the water are captured well. The contast with those Iceland greens are wonderful. This really needs to be seen full screen to be appreciated.
Great shapes, lines and colors. It is very abstract, yet not. Real sweet, Harry.
A beautiful study of line, patterns and colors. Lovely image, and I look forward to seeing more from your trip.
What a fantastic image of an amazing place, Harry. I particularly like the right side with the MG mountain and its snowfields. And I think a B+W version would lose a lot of punch and become almost too abstract, if there is such a thing.
Wow, a fantastic picture! Congratualations. Willem
