I went to this lake hoping to photograph the moose that are known to frequent the area. Shortly after I arrived these 2 bull moose entered the lake at the same time. I had never photographed bull moose before so I was very excited! But other people were already at the lake just as excited as I was and I could not get a photograph of the moose without any people in it. So I decided to make lemonade out of lemons and was very pleased to capture these three girls who were excited to see the moose as well. Besides the moose, and the girls, I also love all the flies around the moose's rump.
If you have any suggestions for improving this image, I would love to hear them.

4 commentsI could see cropping it down from the top and right to just the three essential elements: the moose, the girls and the flies. I like that the girls are a bit out of focus and their three different reactions.
"So I decided to make lemonade out of lemons" says it all Carol..
Even with the three gals in the BG & soft focused, their very different body language speaks volumes.
Excellent details & well exposed.. I like the water action & cloud of flies at the rear too, good added interest.
This would fit in "Man & Nature" as well..
Nice work!
Hey Carol,
For me the thing that makes this one work is not really the wildlife within it, but rather the reaction of the 3 girls to them (even if the girls are softly out of focus one's attention is drawn to them and I certainly lingered on them and examined their varied postures and poses). So in that sense it seems to me that this one is really more of a "Man & Nature" image than a wildlife image (as our galleries are defined). That doesn't mean I feel it should be moved to another gallery (I'm fine with it being here), just that it's a bit tough to critique as a wildlife image. If I ignore the girls (which seems almost ludicrous to do with this image!) I'd say I'd prefer more separation between the furry subjects (but that the light on them is REALLY nice - love the rim lighting on the velvety antlers!!).
Cool shot...
Cheers..
Brad
It's an interesting scene, especially given all of the human/wildlife interaction issues that have been well-publicized in some of our parks this year. I think Dave's crop suggestion is sound... at least cropping a bit more horizontally to eliminate the distracting bright grass could help.
