Going through my files I found this photo that I never posted.  Taken at Connetquot River State Park, Long Island on 11/12/2004.

Canon 10D, EF 300/4L, ISO 400, f/4 @ 1/250.  This is full frame minus a small crop off the top.

Boy, a 10D, that is going back to the dark ages, Jim.  Lovely composition and the perch is just great.  I always like preening poses and this one is excellent.

Yes, that 10D was my first DSLR and it's way behind my current 50D in terms of image quality.  But even the 50D is entering the dark ages compared to the latest and greatest.

Thanks for taking a look and commenting!

I think I remember going to this place when I was working for a NY company.  Great exposure on this one, Jim.  The whites are clean, the perch is really nice, and the comp puts the bird in the right spot. You could even take a touch off of the right side while still keeping the broken branch and it would still work. Nice.

Jerry, CRSP is on the north side of Sunrise Highway (Rt 27) just east of where it intersects Southern State Parkway.  I spent a lot of time there with mostly 35mm slides to show for it. I like your suggestion of taking a sliver off the right side of this one.

Very pleasing image, Jim. Any other jewels dark and deep in the archives? What I call slide mining, going deep into the files to see what gems I may have overlooked.

The 10D was also my first digital camera. Drug it to Africa and used it only when I thought I'd shot enough film on a subject. In JPG no less (old dog, new trick syndrome). Even at that it captured a weekly pick in wildlife a few years back during my first stint at NPN.  TFS.

devil................Jim, I missed this one earlier. Lovely and a bit stoic portraiture of this gorgeous Egret......laugh

btw: I was a L.I. transplant from the Huntington Station & Northport / East Northport area as a kid. Can't say I know my way around back there anymore as I've not visited since the mid 60's now. I use to fish with my grandfather off Montauk Pt. as teen. We were never skunked on any outing as we caught lots of flukes and flounders......sad

Jim:

The egret stands out against the dark background. Techs look great and the pose is interesting. I also like the comp but wonder if the image will look better without the background branch. I considered the 10D at one point, but by the time I decided on digital the 40D was out sad

Govind, I considered that too but decided to leave the OOF branches at the top in - mostly because my PS skills would have probably made it worse. cheeky

I still have my 10D! frown
