Tufa towers on the south side of Mono Lake. Tufa towers form below the surface of the water, so these formations were left high and dry when the lake receded many, many years ago.

I decided to crop this square since there was too much foreground in the original neg.

9 commentsYep, I can recall when the Mono Lake had numerous Tufa formations high and dry too, Preston. This old Tri-X is perfect for this scene. I really like it as presented but might play with a slightly cropped view on the left to eliminate the tree in mid ground, and a bit off the top to retain the perspective......just a thought not any nit at all.....
Back in 82-83 was there any water in the lake?....
Seems like a lot has changed out there since those days.........
It's got to be a treat to go back through these old shots and reprocess them with the current technologies. My first trip to Mono Lake was just last year and outside of the people, it is pretty cool. I agree with Paul on the crop from the left to eliminate the cut-off tree. I really like the grain in the tri-X, gives it that old time feel.
Nice tufa scene. You might see something like this again if the drought continues. I agree with the crop and i might bring down the mid-tones throughout quite a ways and even more so in the sky?
Preston, This is really an interesting scene to look at and I especially like the textures it has. I agree a small crop on the left would work well here. Might be interesting to see the sky a little darker too, but I do like it as is.

Really nice Preston. The tree branch intrusion doesn't bother me at all, but a crop would be fine too. The contrast of the tufa towers looks great, but I might consider increasing the contrast of the sky a bit.
Very nice Preston. The only place I know of with water and tufa together is Pyramid Lake north of Reno but it may be dry by now...
Thanks All. I appreciate your suggestions.
I decided I like the crop, so I did that. I also worked the sky and not-sky independently.
Let me know what you think.

Preston, clicking on the cropped version brings up a nice darker area around the image and it is a real winner as a rework IMO......
Lots going on here leading to an engaging comp. Original post feels a bit gray and I prefer the increased contrast in the repost.
