In order to get the appropriate foreground, I had to let a wave from the unpredictable seas at Jökulsárlón surge past me, so that I could photograph the following wave hitting the ice as the preceding wave was rushing away ... This is the result of the second attempt to get this shot. The first attempt I had to grab the camera/tripod mid exposure as I felt myself and the tripod being washed away and fight my way out of the water. The second time round, I planted both myself and tripod very firmly in the sand and waited (which is not a good feeling!) for the first wave to hit and go past me. I did not try a third attempt ... There are less fraught (and wet) ways of obtaining a photograph but i think this one was worth the adrenaline.

4 commentsGreat composition. Lots of energy of course, and I'm glad it was just ice that was stranded (would have had to study it quite a while to be certain just what the waves had caught). Especially like the blue ice in the monochromatic surroundings.
That is one amazing photograph, the way the blue ice is set against the dark grey background and jet black of the beach is just perfect.
The water action is very well captured. Love the way the blues pop.
Love this! Really catches the dynamics of the action, and the contrasting color gives the images an almost minimalist feel despite all the content.
