Last year while wandering in Devils Garden, I found this single hoodoo on a large pedestal. The sun had not yet illuminated the formation The foreshortening of the extreme wide angle diminishes the upper part of the hoodoo.

4 commentsInteresting formation and some nice contrast in textrues. The different colors work well together. It would have been nice to have some clouds in the sky to add interest and some sun lighting up the hoodoo to make the colors pop.
Looks like "ET" waiting for his pick-up...Like the colors that are at work here and there are some interesting lines and shapes in the redrock. I might tone down the hot yellow spot and bushes along the middle right of the frame. The image would still be strong with just the pedestal and hoodoo, a little less of the foreground and crop the right side to eliminate the bushes and yellow light. There are times when I want an interesting sky as a dramatic background, but in this case I think the clean blue with white shading enhances the colors and frames the distinctive subject matter of the image. Nice photo, Bill.
Bill, This is really nice! For me it has a wonderful feel and yet I see Stephen's crop suggestions working very nice. I also like this sky and think that is a big part of what makes this image work so well. I really enjoy the light blue tones surrounding the shape and color of the hoodoo. The larger version just makes it better with very nice detail and textures. Cool shot!

This is a fine look at this hoodoo, Bill. l like the shrubs in the foreground, the strong sense of looking up at the formation, and all of the lovely subtle colors in the sky. The touch of brighness on the right side completes the story of a fine early morning find.
