Half-Blood Moon

Looks like I'm the first one to post a moonscape of yesterday's "super lunar eclipse."  :D   (Oops, make that second -- I took too long making an edit and talking to my wife.)

Clouds moved in after the full eclipse, so I could not shoot the whole sequence (but I did that before, so no big deal).  But for a few minutes while the clouds were still patchy, they made a nice addition to the surrounding sky.  Good thing, because I would not want to crop this down for a frame-filling moon, since I had to shoot at ISO 10,000 to 12,800 to keep the shutter speed a 1/8 sec. or faster when the moon was dark.  (Hmmm...Now I'm wondering if I could have used a slower shutter speed -- too late now.)

Canon 7D Mark II; 100-400mm.
1/8 sec. @ f/6.3; ISO 10,000

3 bracketed exposures of the bright side added to the basic exposure to get a little detail in the sunlit part, hand-blended.  However, I left it fairly bright because that's how it looked, with a HUGE difference in brightness between the sunny and shadow sides.  ( It was easy when it was all in the shadow. :-)  )

Nicely done..!   ISO 10,000 looks realtively noise free and cleaned-up well.   I like the cloudy mood of this.  One of the best seen today.

Wayne,

This is exactly how it looked to me and I took many images with it showing the orange and then the blown-out (or near blown-out) white part.  The clouds add a lot here... I only had a few faint stars near the moon so my images were a bit dull (other than the moon).

With respect to shutter speed - I blew it for a lot of my images shooting at 5-6 seconds.  Turns out that was too much and there was blur from the movement.  1 second seemed to be a sweet spot and allowed me to use an ISO of 500-640

Wayne, That is a great shot of that special moon. The clouds and stars worked out great for you! Wonderful capture!

Love those clouds Wayne. Makes it really mysterious. Wish I had brought my 400. I used a 70-200mm + 1.4x.

Very cool, Wayne. The clouds frame the moon and give this a mysterious and abstract quality.

Sorry about the cloud angst but I think it really worked to your advantage here in your mysterious image.  I really like the feel here.  The moon by itself is, well, the moon.  Your colors are good and the I too had some problems with the lighter areas later during the final stages.

I like this a lot Wayne.  Those clouds really add to the drama.  I had the same problems as you, figuring out workable shutter speeds, the huge contrast between dark and light, etc.  I like the blown out part because, as you said, that's how it looked.

Nice, Wayne.  The clouds add a spooky kind of look. Like one of the old werewolf movies.

The clouds are a sweet addition to this look, Wayne. It's interesting to see the many looks from around the country and world on this phenomenon. I'm looking forward to the next phase in 2033 already......sad

Wayne, the clouds here are a great addition...just missing someone on a broom wearing a tall hat....  The subtle touches of texture in the bright area look good and are an important addition.  We were clouded over, darn it.

I think the clouds add a lot of character to the image Wayne and give it distincton amongst the other moon images.
