Bond Falls

This is a picture I made last week when I headed to northern WI and Upper MI. I was early for the fall color so worked on a few other images. I made this one at Bond falls in Upper MI. It was mid-day and the light was pretty bright with clear blue skys and I really didn't think I would even make a shot. After looking around for awhile I decided to try a couple of shots and this was one of those. I used a 6 stop ND filter to get some longer exposure and actually ended up liking this one. Appreciate any thoughts you might have on it. Thanks!

5D3, 70-300L @200, ISO 160, F/11 at 0.4 sec. 6 stop ND filter.

Well done Nick, I love the FG water flow and the BG vertical flow. A tough exposure for sure with the drastic variation of light. The cotton like water in the left center is the only part I can't wrap my brain around. Not sure what would improve it though. I've always enjoyed water blurred images (ala David Muench). devil

Very nice composition.  Lovely interplay of light, especially in the center of the falls.  Well done.

Nice contrasts between hard and soft, Nick, with a very pleasing overall bluish tonality.  The sharply focused parts of the rock anchor the composition beautifully.

Nick, what a really neat image. For me it's not only the fine technical aspects with motion, highlights, and darks. It's also about the vertical, horizontal, and a bit diagonal viewing aspects. The water, rocks, and sunlight fills the image from varying directions and amplitudes.......enlightened

All of it collectively comes together for a truly unique & wonderful image overall.......devil

Nick, the contrast between the downward action and the top and the sideways action along the bottom works well.  Including that small ledge between them is a fine touch.  I'm also enjoying the splashing action in the plunge pool.  It's a fine waterfall action shot.

Lovely light Nick.  You chosen shutter speed works well in accentuating that light.

Effective and convincing image, both for composition and technical skills. Very well done IMHO.

All the best,

Thanks much to all of you for your comments on this. It was fun trying to come up with something here that might work. I don't shoot many pictures in bright mid-day light that workout very well so I usually avoid it all together. Thanks, Nick

The tension created by the water flowing both horizontal and vertical gives this image an unusual appeal.  A very interesting composition.  You did a pretty good job of overcoming the light issue.

Fantastic composition, Nick.  The vertical and horizontals flows of water are so unique.  Great job handling the light which had to be a real challenge.  Any wiggleroom you may still have in processing on that bright band of water on the left side might be worth exploring to get some sort of detail in that area.  Either way, superbly done.

 Nick:

Very nice vision of this subject!  Falls do have subtle colors and this brings this out nicely.  My only minor criticism, and possibly not technically possible with your setup, is the softness in the background fall. A matter of opinion.  The sharpness of the rocks in the mid foreground are a good focus point.

Thanks for sharing!    Tom

I love it!  ... and that's kind of a surprise to me since I am not usually fond of such long exposures.  The contrasts in ligth/dark and horizontal/vertical are wonderful.  The POV draws me into the scene, and the overall softness makes this feel like I am dreaming of being there!

Remarkable shot.  I esp like the vertical and diagonal lines of the water and just a hint of rock for contrast.

Excellent lines and flows!  This one is working for me. There is a lot going on, but it all works well together. Very nicely done.

The more waterfalls I see the more I like seeing a piece of that waterfall's essence instead of the whole thing.  This is really nice.  Like others I like the multiple directions of flow.  The center right area looks particularly interesting.

Side note: I was in Door County last weekend...looks like later this week color should pop that way.  It was starting but only small pockets of spectacular.
