In Motion

I photographed this Red Fox earlier this Fall, in Grand Teton National Park. The fox was hunting in a meadow just before sunset, when all of a sudden she made a dash across the meadow. I was shooting handheld and quickly panned with her, trying to keep the camera moving at the same speed. Out of 8 or 10 images from the sequence, I was pleased to see that 1 of them was tack sharp, at least in the face. Unfortunately I felt the background was slightly distracting in the original image. Some of the sage brush looked a bit choppy and just didn't have enough blur to it. To remedy this, I exercised a bit of artistic liberty here and added some motion blur in post to help make the fox stand out better.

Thanks for looking and for any thoughts!

Dude. You absolutely hit this. I'm a big fan of pans and motion blurs and this one is spot on...the perfect sharpness of not just the face but also the front legs (and body and tail for the most part) is exquisite. Really nicely set up and executed.

Excellent capture of a moment, Zach, and good work in post too.  As an option it would also work well as a pano crop from the top to just below the dark part.

This is one of the better motion blurs I have ever seen. Not only is the fox sharp, but there is great light and detail. Just an over all fine image.
