With theft on his mind!  There were a couple of frames between this one and the previous, but I had little or no eye contact in them.  The one with the fish jumped up even before the intruder arrived.

For those who are interested, the lumps sticking out of the water are oysters.  Sculpin come in to spawn at high tide and get trapped in the extensive oyster beds at this location as it ebbs.  That attracts lots of fish eaters, primarily Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Gulls and Crows.

7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu Gimbal on RRS legs, f/7.1, 1/2500, iso 500, manual exposure (adjusted to avoid blowing out the whites in the Bald Eagles, so I have to raise it a bit in post processing for herons), Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 15.9 MP.  Note the difference in crop once they stretch out and extend their wings.  Taken July 1st at 8:23 am.

I'm sure I heard that sculpin say something nasty in Klingon! (for those who don't know,Star Trek villians, the Klingons and the Klingon Bird of Prey, their space ship, is modeled after the heron).  These herons can really put up a fight and you got a nice sharp capture.  Have you tried to bring out the detail in the shadows with camera raw? I can just imagine the sounds that went along with the scene.  The positioning of the herons is perfect.

Great action captured Dennis, both birds look to be pretty sharp. There must be more to this series...?

Terrific action shot Dennis! In spite of the shadows you got great detail on the bird and clear looks at both faces-excellent capture.

Nice action and behavior Dennis. I like that both are off the ground and love the meal. I do find myself wishing the shadows and contrast were not so heavy.
