Flying

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I last posted, so here's one from earlier this year in British Columbia. We were in search of Short Eared Owls, and luckily we found some. I was so excited to finally be able to photograph these owls again, as they are one of my favourite species. I was even more happy to have the opportunity to photograph them in flight. This guy was hunting the fields near us and managed to catch a meal later on, and even perched and ate it right in front of us! It was a pretty awesome experience.

I really like how there's a sense of movement with everything being blurred except for the owl. Any critiques or comments are greatly appreciated!

Thank y'all for lookin' and I'll post more soon! crying

One of my favorite birds.
Nice image, showing the birds in its environment.

Very nice frame.  1/250 was fast enough for a sharp bird, but as you noted, a sense of motion with the background.  Small in the frame works well for this image for me.

I like this, Jenaya.  Interesting that the bird is so much brighter than the bg.  Is all of that natural or did you brighten it some in processing?

Hi Jenaya, nice to see you posting. Love the backside wing position. I Aldo agree with Keith on the size of the bird in this frame suits the image well. Did you by any chance mask the owl and perform any exposure, dodging and contrast adjustments? It looks quite a bit brighter and has more contrast than the BG. I do that sometimes, but usually only when my subject is dark and my BG light. I might make some overall adjustments to bring the BG in more balance with the owl.

Sweet flight capture of this beauty in it envirnment Jenaya. I like the backlight, it helps the owl stand out from the background nicely

Excellent flight shot! You caught a really nice wing position. Looks like a very intense hunter, excellent catch!  Ray
