SharpShin Hawk & RP

I was looking through old files for something appropriate for this weeks "Weekly Challenge" and ran across a folder from Septemb er 21st, 2013 of a close encounter with a Sharp-shinned Hawk that perched up on a dead Madrone branch that we used to hang bird feeders and was about 6-8 feet from our back porch door.  It stayed put and gave me a bunch of poses after I'd opened the door.  I posted one at the time, but we were heading out on a vacation to Australia shortly thereafter, and byu the time we returned, I'd forgotten about it.  Since I found them, I thought I'd process another one (or two) and post it.

1Div, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held, f/8, 1/800, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering, no compensation.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Slight crop from a vertical original to reframe the bird a bit, removed some extra branches that didn't intersect either the bird or perch and darkened the bright area above the bird and the perch a bit.  I may have darkened the perch a bit too much-I'd be interested in your opinions.  Final size is 11.4 Mpixels (16MP is full frame on this camera).  Taken at 3:44 pm on September 21st, 2013.  I can't recall for sure, but I think the light was filtered sun.

I appreciate your comments on the last post and look forward to your input on this one.

Thanks,

Dennis,

reading the processing you applied to this picture, let me undestand your comments on my photos better. All over you managed to let the picture look very natural, despite the imaging processecing you have applied.

Nice job devil

Perch looks fine to me, Dennis. Beautiful photo of a sharpie, but what struck me first was the color and texture of the birds breast. This is a great shot, and the intent stare holds the attention of the viewer.  Well done!

Looks good to me as posted, including the tone of the perch.

Hi Dennis, works for me, even with the highlights. I just wonder if it sits better flipped???? Good detail and clarity, but I might just tone down a fraction the nearest highlight to the end of the perch at the top so it's not so 'white'.

There is a lot to like in this image;  diagonal perch, sharp where it needs to be, good pose, and nice BG.  The larger image helps with the white highlights.

Hi Dennis,
I'm glad you've decided to post a new one, because it's pretty beautiful bird, on a great image.

The over all quality of exposure and sharpness on the bird is exceptional.  However, personally I do feel the "hot spots" in the bg are very distracting.

Thanks for the comments.  Here's a repost with the bright patch at the end of the perch dimmed and the exposure of the whole bg dropped a bit.

Hey Dennis,
What a nice regal pose this Hawk gave you and you took full advantage of the opportunity. The repost gets my vote with the hot spots toned down. I see no difference in the hawk between the two post which is just fine with me because you nailed it the first time. The perch is sweet and the wind blown feathers add additional interest along with the tack sharp detail.
Well done . . .  devil

Outstanding Dennis! The detail, perch (brightness looks good to me) and processing all look top notch. The repost with the toned down bight spots is an improvement IMO. Great work!  devil

Wow!  That bird looks deadly.  The light on the eye, the ruffled feathers and stunning details.  It cannot get better than this.  Repost is particularly strong.  Well done
