Fox in the Sage
by Max Waugh
When visiting Yellowstone in winter, I usually hope to find a nice fox in its winter coat. If it can be hunting in a pristine snowfield, even better. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck nailing that perfect combination of subject and conditions. Last December, for instance, I found a fox on my final day, but the snow levels were so low that sagebrush was poking through everywhere you looked. So I initially dismissed many of the shots I took that afternoon, but at second glance I thought this was kind of a fun composition. The clumps of sage created an interesting pattern and the hunting fox fit perfectly in among the scattered dots of vegetation. Though it's not the traditional winter fox image I'm still striving for, I liked the graphic impact.

8 commentsthe mood is very nice and also the fact that the fox pops out so nicely. Usually I do not like very much pictures of animals photgrphed from the rear, but this works very well for me.
Nice one mate!
This image is out of the ordinary and the color of the fox really pops in a landscape of winter monochrome. I actually quite like that the fox isn't looking at you. It makes the viewer wonder what he might have his eye on. Cheers!
I totally agree with you about the interesting patterning here, and I just love the graphic nature of the scene. The extreme colour contrast provided by the coat of the fox makes this shot work so well. I also quite like how you've positioned the fox in the frame and how it's looking up that opening as though it's planning its route.
Very nicely done - love this one...
Cheers...
