Yosemite Details #7

Thank you for your comments on my previous posts. They are appreciated.

Lon, Harley, and I visited this small copse of cottonwood trees in El Capitan Meadow. The trees have very interesting lines after the leaves have fallen. The frosted grass and ferns on a chilly morning adds to the quiet mood of the meadow before the sun hits it.

Nice layers and different colors of autumn. Looks like the image could use a CCW rotation, but that might be my unbalanced perspective. This turned out well, Preston.

I like this because of all of the different tones and textures presented. I like how you were able to hold detail in the grasses and the leaves on the trees. I thought cottowoods had darker bark. Could these be willows?

The lightness of the grasses really draws the attention, which is great. I like the "controlled chaos" in them, and the small parts with brown leaves sticking out from the grass is a nice addition. Excellent use of layering as well, those trees in the middle layer sure look nice.

Preston, This is really some nice work. The layers look great and I'm really enjoying the light color and details of the foreground grass. The contrast of the yellow leaves against the dark background is very nice. Wonderful image!

Just beautiful textures and tones, Preston.  I especially like the gradient of the colours from light to dark up through the frame to those dark greens at the top.

Well done my friend!   On two occasions now you have created something that I just didn't see, or more truthfully, what I did see is more suited for the trash.  This is actually quite outstanding.  I love the comp for the nicely balanced thirds, of the grasses, saplings and solid pine backdrop.  I'm really glad you included enough of the grasses, ferns - and even those little pods, along the bottom.

The leaves of the saplings stand out nicely against the darker pine trees.  I have no nits or suggestions.  Beautifully seen and processed.

Jim, these are young cottonwood trees. Our species is the Fremont Cottonwood, which has a lighter bark.

Here's a more general view from a few years ago.

Lon, I was hoping to see what you came up with when we were wandering around this spot.

I really like the light layering from front to back - I'm wondering if you could pull out a bit more of detail on the very bright foreground, without losing the "frosty" look?

Very nice way of representing these trees. Reminds me of a birch grove in my area. Works great with the bright grass and the dark backdrop.

Love the layers in this image, Preston.  Excellent.  One small nit (very small) is the light area of rock on the upper left of the dark background trees.  Kind of a minor eye magnet in an otherwise homogenous background. Really well seen.

Happy Thanksgiving!
