Lone Tree

I'm going through some images from my spring trip to the San Juan Islands and came across an evening series where I used a CPL and tried to smooth out the water.  This is one of my favorites

I think the moodiness of this image is what I like most about it. It presents a calm feeling to me. I think softening the water helps convey the quiet mood. Nice

I like the mood of this. I think the tree could be placed a bit more to the right and down just a bit. I do like the line of the rock leading to the tree. The soft water, the color and texturs in the rock, and the sky add to the quiet mood.

That lone tree is a very nice addition, especially the fact that it seems to lean back so as not to fall from the cliff, that's great. I do agree that it maybe would have been nice if the tree had a wee bit more space from the corner. Water looks nice, with the right amount of subtle details.

Luke, This is a nice feeling image and I agree with the others that it has a calming quiet mood. The shoreline leading ones eye back to the tree works very nice. I too could see the tree being down and in just a little but still it works quite nice as is. I like all the lichen covered rock and mix of grass in the foreground too.

Luke,

The placement of the tree actually creates a successful tension in an otherwise quiet and peaceful scene.  The detail in the foreground with the rock, lichen and sprigs of plants make for a lot to explore.  Despite the tree really being squeezed in the corner, this works wonderfully!

Initially I thought about a crop.  But now I'm not so sure, but here's my thought anyway.  A crop of about 1/4, give or take from the bottom and somewhat less than that from the right.  For me at least, this actually creates a tension or dynamic between the tree and now the rock in the water.  The details up front are still there to explore and the distant mountains and calmness of the sea still add to the image. I'm more convinced what you have originally posted is the best.

I think that there are several beautiful aspects to this image, not least the composition, but what really pulls me in is the perfect rendition of evening light!!
