Male Hairy WP
by Jerry Marella
It got cold and snowy over the past weekend so I thought I'd see how I'd do taking photos of woodpeckers with gloves and the rest of the cold weather cloths on. It is much more difficult to photograph in the cold than it is in warmer weather. Once the colder temps come, the birds are more cooperative. They'll stay longer on a perch near the feeders, and they'll make repeated trips back and sometimes use the same perches each time. I still find it hard to spot the bird, get the lens on it, and get focus before they hop or fly off. But, sometimes I get lucky. Even though this one doesn't hold up as perfectly sharp at a 100% raw file, it looked pretty good scaled down a bit.
I'm hoping for critiques regarding the comp and depth, as I think I hit the perch a little better than the eye of the woodpecker. I like it, but I think there may be other options that may work.
Comments and critiques are appreciated.

7 commentsfor me the technical aspects look fine, good sharpness and well exposured. I like the pose of the bird and the light conditions. Anyhow I think a bit more inclusion of the perch would have been fine as well.
