Run for Your Life

Late one afternoon we followed a pack of wild dogs as they hunted. The pack came across a herd of oryx that had spread out a bit as they grazed. In this photo, a lone dog was trying to isloate an oryx and keep it from returning to the safety of the herd. If the dog(s) could isolate the individual, they could run it to the point of exhaustion and then eviscerate it. This oryx though was able to return to the herd. Taken with a D4, 80-400 lens at 175, f/8 1/800 and Auto ISO. Cropped to about 80% of the original.Richard

Very nice, Richard. Love the lines created by the dust and soft light creating an anticipated collision in the front of the frame. Great action!

Cheers,

Hisham.

Such a great action shot - the two animals converging toward you is exhilirating for the viewer and the dust clouds tell the whole story.  Beautiful capture

Hi Richard, you talk about light, I think this too falls into your comment also. Love the trail of light created by the dust kicked up by both WD & Oryx. Nicely framed, but I wondered about a slight drop in the whole crop so there is a fraction more for the Oryx to run into, but no deal breaker. Personally I woud have preferred a slightly higher SS to really nail the action, but it appears you have done so, no problem with the D4!

Great job of getting in FRONT of this action!  The converging lines of illuminated dust really help make this shot.  Thumbs up.

Wonderful action! Almost has me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen, but it sounds like the oryx escaped. Great light and I love the dust trails. In fact, I think if you cropped out a bit, it could add a little more info about the environment and where the animals were coming from. Nice click!
