Popcorn Dolphins

This is one of those shots where I have to assure people that the animals are 100% wild. Several years ago we came across a group of about 30 Pacific white-sided dolphins off the south end of Quadra Island, B.C. This was a beautiful afternoon in late October and the colors of the changing foliage were stunning. We watched the dolphins for over an hour engage in these "popcorning" displays. I'm not quite sure if this was purely social or perhaps some mating behavior going on here (probably both!), but it was a really special encounter. I cropped this image about 50% and ran it through a Nik Software detail extractor because I wanted to pick up more detail in the foliage. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. I tried to keep it subtle.

Katie: you've captured a great action photo, and one that shows that frame fillers are not the only way to show action. My only suggestion would be to boost the contrast/saturation a bit. On my calibrated monitor, the colors are a bit flat. Excellent otherwise. Richard

Katie, I really love the action you managed here and love the placement in the frame. I do agree with Richard about maybe a slight boost in contrast and saturation might make this more dynamic. It appears as an overcast day, so I wouldn't put too much into it, but a tad might give it a different feel.

Thanks for the feedback!

Richard and Kurt: I will try boosting the saturation a bit to see if that helps the image. I appreciate the suggestion! :)

This is great fortune to have them showing off so perfectly.  I agree with others suggesting  a tweak in upping brightness and saturation for more pop.  You might achieve it with some careful curves applied.  Again, really nice.

I love this shot, Katie!  Your timing was excellent and despite the action you did a great job of composing the landscape in the background.  The dolphin details are great and I like the action freeze with all the water spray.  The large version is especially nice as it puts you much closer to being there!  Very nice devil
