Up-Terned ......... this tern was flying up just after missing its catch, then shook off the excess water, as seen with dark sky background,. This shaking is quite common to this tern but seldom captured or seen, due to their fast movements.

Bill,
great action and nice to hear the story behind. Technically great, what can be seen also at the large version. Well done

I have taken a lot of tern photos attempting to get an image like this without success. It is very difficult (at least for me). Your photo is exceptional, especially the head position and water droplets. Thanks for the specs: I now know that I must use at least a 1/1250th shutter speed. Excellent.

Wonderful catch on your part, even if the Tern missed its, Bill. Your timing was just perfect. There seem to be a coupleof hot spots in the plumage, but nothing very serious, especially considering the action and pose here. A note for future reference that Nate drummed into me is that for flight shots particularly, manual exposure set to just avoid blowing the whites in direct sun gives more consistently good results than auto exposure with compensation-though of course, nothing works every time.

Great action captured in this image Bill. Timing is right on. The droplets make this for me.

Great shot Bill, love the upterned pose and the water flying around, I personally would have used a higher iso and shutter speed for this type of action shot but it worked out great here.

Hello and really appreciate your excellent feedback!
Cuba mornings on the beach are quiet with not many people walking. Usually a couple small fishing boats pass by on their days outing to other destination. The terns and gulls follow along looking for small bait fish. Terns are busy seeking surface fish before the pelicans arrive.
