Ring tail cat
by John Tobias
A seldom seen member of the raccoon family, the ringtail cat also known as the cacomistle is seldom seen in the daylight. This photo was taken at the Miller Park Zoo, on a overcast day. The pair of ringtails were exploring their exhibit including a hollow log suspended from the top of the exhibit. The low light and dark interior of the log required the use of flash to obtain photos of the ringtails.

5 commentsthanks for posting this great portrait and I have to say that these are the type of images I personally would like to see more in this gallery, since in my opinion it shows that one can do also under these conditions very natural looking images.
Also the description you made is the way we want to see here, meaning a clear statement where it was taken and under which conditions.
Well done
P.S. Of course I welcome also pet photos, do not get me wrong, OK ?
Seldom seen indeed, first time for me and what a great look at the Ringtail you provided. The portrait style presentation works great with just enough habitat provided to add interest. The detail and colors are superb with nice use of fill flash.
Well done . . .
I only got a brief glimpse of one of these guys out in the wild. Flash is perfect and f6.3 worked very well for capturing the detail of the ringtail's face.......................Jim
Wow - those are just amazing eyes. When I look at this ring tail's head it looks like an amazing "sensory array" - those huge whiskers, the big ears, those eyes...(and of course, they make it darned cute too).
I'm in agreement with Uwe that it's great to see shots such as these in this gallery. This is an example of an extremely tough animal to photograph effectively in the wild, and your image will help many people become aware of the very existence of animals like this! And that is a good thing...
Cheers...
