Prepare for Takeoff
by Dennis Plank
One of the places that Iloved this year was the Leonabelle Turnbull birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. Not being used to semi-tropical birds I saw a ton of new species. while I'd seen this one before (there's a colony at Moses Lake in Washington), I'd never gotten at all close before. This shot was thelast frame before it raised it's wings and started to take off and it more than filled the frame in all of those shots. I liked this one in that it was such an ungainly look and yet in the next frame it suddenly lost that and looked positively graceful.
7D23, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, monopod, f/7.1, 1/1250, iso 1250, aperture priority, center weighted average metering. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 12.2 MPixels. Taken February 24th at 8:21 am under overcast skies.
Thanks for looking and have a great Holiday and wonderful 2016.

4 commentsI like the low angle of photography and as you say alos the pose of the pelican. A piity that you were not able to make some in flight images. As usual haveing fixed lenses on makes it difficult to change the focal lenght and these guys really get big once the span their wings
Dennis, ditto on the upcoming New Year wishes for 2016......
As with many avian photos I find a lot of aircraft traits, looks, or copying by mankind. This Pelican immediately struck me as looking like an old PBY preparing to become airborne. The detailed version has an excellent look overall, and the whites are very clean here. Nice work........
