Canon 1D-X, 500mm f4 x 1.4TC, handheld
f11, 1/400, ISO4000

One of several surprising birds along the Gold Fork of the Payette River.

60% crop; selective sharpening to bird. Slight brightening of image. It was fairly dark under overcast skies and at the bottom of the narrow canyon. There's a bit of noise in the blacks but for ISO4000 I'm pretty pleased.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

Excellent, Jim.  A nice job on the image quality, good pose and composition.  Well done.

That's a lot of focal length to be hand holding - I'm impressed at 1/400th second! And I'm impressed with the IQ you have in thids as well.

I am also impressed!  4000 ISO and it looks good!  This woodpecker has been on my mind the last few days.  Our daughter and granddaughters just saw one for the first time at the local nature center.  Then on the CBS Sunday morning show the nature moment showed the pileated woodpecker for most of the segment.  And now this posting. Thanks for sharing.

Jim, I am more impressed that you handheld this than it was ISO 4000. I've gotten acceptable stuff after a little NR at ISO 3200 with the D750. I think it came out pretty well despite the perceived handicaps, although the back plumage is pretty much a washout.cool

You made the most of some difficult lighting conditions.  Nice composition and pose.  More detail in the blacks would put this over the top.  I never seem to catch these guys anywhere near the ground.
