Canon 1D-X, 500mm x 1.4TC, handheld
f7.1, 1/500, ISO1600

By far the most common woodpecker this time of year in SW Idaho. Taken in a snowstorm. The Image Stablization on the 500mm f4 is very good; I'm pretty steady but IS definitely helps.

Cropped to vertical (~70% of full frame). Slight adjustments to Levels and selective sharpening of the bird.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

Jim:  Might be the most common woodpecker, but they are still really great looking.  Nice look at this guy on the snow covered perch.  I think the image looks a bit flat.  I wanted to see a couple of tonal adjustments and a quick clone of the OOF twig in the upper right.  Here's what it looked like after those adjustments.  See what you think.

I like the crop - the slanted branch with the snow adds a lot.
I had to discourage one of these guys from pounding on our eaves the other day.  It wasn't a good compostiton anyway.

The bird I love to hate, Jim.
They are spectacularly beautiful, but I've had a running battle with them for a long time. Living in a log home can be a challenge with them in the area. They can be very persistent, wanting to share the premises or claim it as their own. We always seem to have one that thinks the metal flashing on the chimney is the perfect drumming platform for impressing potential mate. Usually at first light, but anytime really. It sets the dog into a frenzy as well.
I like this pose and crop a lot and the overcast and fill light from the snow cover envelopes the Flicker nicely. Keith's rework, though subtle, gives it a little more pop that I like.

Very nice composition. I prefer the flatter look of the original - it goes with the weather and tells part of the story.

I agree with Richard, but cloning the OOF twig was an improvement.

Very nice job on this flicker, Jim.  The plumage detail, particularly on the head, is wonderful.

Nice head turn and like the falling snow. Not an easy species to get close to, so nice job on all this Jim. I agree with Keith's take on it and like the repost a bit better.
