Canon 1D-X, 500mm x 1.4TC, handheld
f7.1, 1/500, ISO1250

A bird species with even more attitude than a Chickadee, this lady is frowning at an encroaching male.

50% of full frame. Adjustments to Levels and contrast. Selective sharpening to bird.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

Hi Jim,

Red-breasted nuthatches are quite rare in my area for the last 7 years, although they nest at a nature preserve not too far from my house. I wish there was a little more light to pull out some reflections from the eye, but you did very well with the available light.  The BG looks fine and the bird is positioned in the frame quite well.  The small branch tips in the lower right and bottom right can be removed to improve the comp.  They are very subtle, but did catch my eye.  The subject is nice and sharp and I like the tilt of its head..................................Jim

Great puffed out pose, Jim.  It rarely gets cold enough for them to puff up around here.  Excellent detail and dof.

Nice find Jim! I like the position of the bird in the frame and the soft light. Unfortunate he didn't give you a bit more head turn, but I would be happy just finding one of these.
