This is a knot hole in an old fencepost that I have set up as a perch for birs that come to our pond.  It's gotten nicely covered with moss and lichen over the years and has served admirably in a supporting role for many of my Avian images.  I thought it was about time to give it a shot at top billing for once.

5D3, 180mm f/3.5 macro, tripod, f/22, 1/50, iso 200, aperture priority, pattern metering, +1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Full frame.  Taken January 1st at 9:05 am.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

My one comment would be to crop the image so as to omit the patch of sky on the top left, as I find it sort of distracting. But I also realize that if you do that thenyou end up chopping part of the patch of moss, so tough call. Where's the MGM lion?cool

I find this picture very interesting.  The growth on the post provides insite to nature's ability to exist just about anywhere.  What a artistic setup.

Dennis,

I find the idea very nice and I agree with Alberto's suggestion to crop in such a way that the piece of blue sky at the left upper corner is away. It improves the image composition very much.

Technically well done, good sharpness and right on exposure.

What a compelling image, Dennis !  Somehow the inclusion of that small patch of sky top L reinforces the sense of depth, so there's a neat play between the strong presence of the fencepost and the scene glimpsed beyond.  PS having now read Alberto's comment I guess I just have to beg to differ !!

Dennis, I agree with Alberto about the ULC "hole", but a crop removes some other stuff that could well stay in the picture. I took the liberty of "distorting vertically and changing the scale" in lens correction. This way you get to keep all of that nice chunk of green moss anyway.

Thanks, Phil.  I'll have to look at that feature.  It's not one I've ever considered using, so I don't know anything about it, but it looks like it could come in handy.  I was looking at crops and I can just about make it work with a simple crop-it leaves just the tiniest piece of sky that I might be able to clone out.

Dennis: I do like this cropped from the top to eliminate the sky in the ULC. Marvelous textures and details. >=))>
