I was lucky enough to be with another photographer yesterday who has eyes and ears far better than mine and after I was told to "Shut-Up" and "Be Still", I was rewarded with the opportunity to watch a mating pair of Red-Bellied Woodpeckers come and go from their home about 40 feet up in a large Oak tree at the river's edge. Hand held, 65% of full frame.

Had to take a close look to see this one, but worth the search.  Interesting angle of the tree trunk.  Nice colors.  TFS.

John,
Thanks for the kind words,
this is not the tree trunk, it is a limb.

I went back and forth a little on this one Mike with respect to the crop.  The large detailed view is very sharp and it looks like you could easily make this a slightly tighter crop without losing the intent of your image.  But I also like it as is.  The color is very nice.

I like the crop.  This is a classic display of how well birds and their nesting locations are hidden from predators and photographers; in some instances.  It looks like she is making one last check before retiring for the evening.  Thanks for sharing.

Very nice, Mike.  I like the head sticking out of the hole-it conveys everything about the story.  Well done.

Nice find and endearing behavior you've captured here, Mike! I don't know what your original frame held (unsure if this is a crop but appears to be) so I'm not sure what to suggest re possible alternate comps, but in the end I always figure the photographer knew their options when they made those decisions at the computer, and almost certainly chose the one that felt right to them! This one has a nice balance and good graphic strength with the contrasting diagonal, IMO. For what it's worth, I'm not sure I agree with David re cropping further as to me it looks like you might be at the edge of what you can get away with and retain good IQ.
