Mono Blue Salts

Since we're on a Mono Lake kick, here's a last one from me the next morning after the long trudge to the lake shore just before sunrise. The sun was in and out of the clouds below the horizon producing an alternating blue and red light show. I know that it can be easy to push the blue hour color a bit far but this is how I remember it. I liked the pattern in the sky mimicked in the textures of the tufa and water below.

Beautiful image, Dave. The foreground is excellent with a nice mix of tufa and water, and the sky adds plenty of drama. A different view of mono that is excellent.

I'm not a fan of blue landscape, but this is an exception, and very appropriate. I like the mackerel sky as well.cool

Ahhh, clouds with ripples like that are among the best! The bright part in the sky to the right looks a bit washed out, but not too big a deal for sure. The landscape looks sweet with its own shapes and structures, while also being a good compliment to the sky.

This looks good, Dave, with all the blue tones set off well by the touches of yellow along the horizon.  I'm definitely enjoying the long view along the waterway and all the textures in the sky.  I'm not sure about the brighter sliver of land along the left, might be worth burning that in to see how it looks.

Dave,

If I said the word, "muck," would that ring a bell?  I'm guessing at some point walking around down there could get pretty messy. ;-)

I also don't mind the blue hour here; the hint of color on the horizon does give me a sense of "an alternating blue and red light show," even though I of course wasn't there.

Awesome sky/clouds and you've given it their just due.  The wet landscape certainly does make this another unique image from the Mono Lake basin.  A little more conventional compared to previous images, but beautiful none the less.

I find the blue hour to be among my favorite times to shoot. The intensity of the light evens out, and it tends to seem like it gets quiet. You can really revel in the solitude during that time. I think you caught a nice one here. I think the color looks good too. Maybe bring down the brightest high lights in the middle right sky if you can.

Dave,
Very nice. Another unique and creative Mono image. Love the blue tonalities which contrast nicely with the warm sunrise light. If it were mine I would probably try to burn in the bright areas of the sky on the right.

That sky gives an ominous feel to the start of the day. The salt fields gives a look similar to Death Valley's Badlands. Need to wear some boots to muck around this area. A nice stark image.  The blue tones work for me in this one.

Moody blue. The blues work here. You might consider pulling down the cyan, though. I like the various textures and the hint of reflected sky in the water. I agree with Chris about bringing down highs on the right. The hint of sunrise and the distant mounts play a nice supporting roles.

Thanks for all the input and I'll look at this some more. Just wanted to respond to Lon's comment though before working on a re-post. There is a ton of muck down there but wherever I go in the natural world I work at not leaving off-trail footprints (despite the old admonition to "...leave only footprints.") I did walk through knee high dead reeds to get to this spot on the edge of the water/mud/salt but I'm pretty sure no one would know where.  I try to think of the photographer coming behind me and footprints on this muck could last for weeks as the water recedes. It's the least I could do for you folks. crying Similarly, I avoid walking through the middle of meadows or sandy spots in the Sierra unless there is a trail. Snow's always fair game though :-)

Here we go. Burned down some of the bright on the left side and made some improvements to the right side bright sky. Those were both valuable suggestions.

The blue creates a special mood here, and works well. Nice take from Mono.

Hi Dave,

I dig blue, and this image is all about the beautiful blue tonalities through out the scene. The basin is rather interesting, and looks almost like snow. The clouds up top are very tranquil, and this image has a calming feel for myself.

Beautiful work!!!

The repost is even better with those improvement!!!!
