Nice, expansive top down view of the Mesquite Dunes, Dave. The image looks very bright and the shadows pretty strong to have been taken "right after sunset," especially the desert playa at the top which looks like its in bright sunlight. Did you mean after sunrise. wink  Anyway, I like the light on the dunes. I am not fond of the top of the image, but I can't see a better crop.

Scott, thanks for pointing out. Should read right "before" sunset. Need to stop multi-tasking...

I like the soft contrast and color - maybe I would have included a bit more of the flat background?

As Scott highlighted I was not happy with the bright playa in the background either. I thought about cropping in out entirely but did not want to cut the top off the back dunes. I went back and reprocessed reducing the exposure and white point in the background.

I have a soft spot for dunes and I enjoyed this place during my visit some years ago. I liked the more contrasty rendition of the original post, but I agree on the toned down upper part.

My thoughts about the two versions are exactly the same as Dietrich's. I love the original post, but the background is too much in your face. So the background of the repo combined more or less with the dunes from the original would be really sweet. The forms and shapes in those dunes are gorgeous.

I have looked at both of these a few times. The repost looks very flat, so perhaps you could burn down the playa in the background just a bit. Another option would be to experiment with different crops down from the top to completely eliminate play and the bushes.

The dune is the original post look very nice--the light and textures come across very well.

Dave,

The play of light and shadow as well as hues and tones in the dunes are wonderful.

I had the same reaction as you and others about the top.  I also agree that I don't see a crop to be happy with.  I like what you did reprocessing for the top area, but in doing so you lost the contasts in the dunes.  Whatever you did for the top, just mask it out and leave the bottom untouched.
