Old tree at sunset

I have photographed this tree several times over the years.  Was out looking for a good sunset, but no clouds, so visited the tree again.  Was pleased with this image.  Debated on keeping the small trees on the right.  Decided I like them in the image. gives some balance to the scene.

I agree completely John.  The composition with the trees on the right is well balanced.  I appreciate the peaceful, dark twilight view.  I think this view without a bunch of showy clouds gives this a wonderful simplicity, allowing me to appreciate the magnificent old tree without distractions.

A simple image with beautiful colors and a very peaceful feeling. I makes me want to be there.

Yep, those small trees on the right are essential elements to this evocative image. I would though clone away the single stick above the horizon line dead center. There is some banding in the sky on both the small and large versions, most evident on the right side. Some better processors than I here might have some ideas on how that happens and/or how to deal with it.

Having spent the last week dealing with halos on the tree image I just posted, I'm a bit sensitive to them.  Beautiful image and composition.  The banding on the right was also noted.  My warning would be that attempting to clean up the halos in a tree like this might be a fools errand.  Love the silhouette of the tree against the layers of color. I agree that the trees on the right are perfect.

Beautiful dusk image John.  I love this time of day and you've portrayed the colors perfectly.  I think the small trees on the right balance the image out very nicely - good choice keeping them in.

Only small suggestion for any future attempts at this grand old tree, would be to position yourself to get some separation between the lower left branches of the big tree, and the tops of the background trees.  Not a big deal, something to think about for next time.
