Snowy Birch

This is a picture I made this morning. We had a winter storm coming through and I wanted to get out and make a few pictures before I started plowing. The snow was coming down pretty hard when I made this picture and I sure was enjoying it. These birch trees are just a couple of miles from my home and I have only photographed them twice. I was waiting for the right conditions and thought this might be it. Let me know what you think.

I like this a lot Nick.  Nice snowy tones (if that make any sense).

I love the graphics in this winter scene, Nick. The landscape format works beautifully with the vertical birch trees. Great work.

I like this a lot, Nick. The cool white and the great lines of the trees work very nicely. Well done!

Very cool, Nick.  I like the symmetry of this stand.  Sort of fanning out from the center.  Glad you found the opportunity you've been looking for.

Really nice.  The conditions ae perfect. A good place for three more shots of the other seasons.  You've got the tough one.

I think this is just excellent. The two layers - trees in the front and the transition from dark to bright in the background makes this one special for me.

I too like this image a lot. The idea of these sharply delineated tree against that diffused light of gray is very beautiful. The fan like design of trees is also nice. It's well thought out.

I think this was the right moment! Wonderful lines, it looks almost like an etching. Also looks very cold.

Nick, a good study in close to home scenes made to order. Having the view in your mind the conditions became right with the extreme winter conditions here. It's nice to have a well tuned "photographic mind", so to speak.......excellent image...enlightened

The pano format works great, and I really enjoy the background gradient you got here. I think you captured the right conditions for sure!

Beautiful Nick, hard to go wrong with such beautiful, winter wonderland conditions.  You've done an excellent job filling the frame and included just enough of the ground to anchor and reference the scene.  I often don't care to include the ground, especially if it's just blank snow, so I think you're fortunate to have the scattering of grasses or whatever breaking up what would otherwise be just plain white at the bottom - so it works well here.

I'm guessing you didn't stop with just one image?  Did you get anything closer, completely filling the frame with snow-blasted birch?  Looks like one could be like a kid in a candy store with these conditions.

Great job on the processing/conversion too.

Paul, Roel and Lon, Thanks much guys! These conditions were so much fun to photograph and it really is amazing how it changed the look of this scene. For the most part it just doesn't look good enough to photograph in most conditions but with this heavy snow coming it was just what I wanted.
Lon, Yes, I did a couple of closer shots as well. Took a quick look at the raw files but haven't done anything with them yet. Nick

There is a wonderful balance in this image to me, Nick. I enjoy the subtlety of the delicate textures, and the light in the distance really draws me in.

HI Nick,

One has to love the photography opportunities the wet snow brings to landscape photography. You had a vision of a scene that could be stunning with the right conditions, and you executed your vision beautifully. I very much enjoy the graphic quality of this image with the snow on the Birch trees creating a winter wonderland.  The large version really brings this scene alive, and wonderful work Nick.

NIck, this is a view that must be seen large to appreciate.  I'm thoroughly enjoying the mix of snow with scattered trunks and branches.  This does a fine job of capturing the feeling of a winter snow.
