Ocean Sky

by Kathy Barnhart

I once asked a woman who had moved from California to New Mexico if she missed the ocean. She said, "The sky is my ocean in New Mexico." In this image, the ocean is my sky as I looked down a cliff into the silvery winter Pacific at midday. This is an unusual vantage point for an ocean image, so I will be curious to get any feedback from you. Thanks in advance for any comments, critiques, or suggestions for improvement.

Wow, Kathy, this is fascinating. When I looked at the thumbnail, I thought I was looking at beautiful sky and mountain image.  I absolutely love it.   I really like the triangle shape centered and the line of what could be mistaken for fog hanging on the peak. The silhouetted trees really anchor this.  My only suggestions, and these are very tiny things, would be to selectively reduce the highlights and there is a small blurred spot(?) in the foam directly above the tallest tree and nearly to the top of the frame that I would clone.  Very creative.

I'll have to second what Gary said about this image, Kathy. This is very different; great thinking outside the box.

Wow!  I thought this was a snow capped peak with some crazy clouds as well from the thumbnail.  This messes with your mind for a moment.  I like this a lot.  Really superb.

Minor nit from me would to even out the grey around the trees.  It has a halo-ish look.

Lovely monochrome image Kathy.  The beach patterns are superb as is the juxtaposition and reality check that the tree tops provide.

This is beautiful! Very creative. I would also love to see the ocean pattern without the tree tops, just abstract water. I think both would work very well.

Kathy,
Very nice. Intriguing and original composition. B&W rendering works great.

Wonderfully creative image, Kathy. To be honest, it doesn't look like a sky to me. If it didn't have the wave in the right corner it might look more as a sky. Although perhaps that surge may work in your favor in that it brings the sky sensation back to reality. If you crop a section of the top off it makes a nice panorama as well. In fact the best part of this is the bottom 3/4 of the image in my opinion. I love it.

Very cool, even though I agree with Igor that it doesn't really look like clouds to me. The tree tops in the frame are spot on, and the patterns in the sand are fascinating!

Kathy,

This is fantastic!  This would be outstanding without the trees, but having them in the frame just turns this in to a mind bender!  Without your description, I would have to say this couldn't be anything but a composite!  I'm still trying to imagine how this scene could come together, but I guess being at a high enough vantage point this is possible.

The patterns in the surf and the glare, reflections from the sun are just wonderful.  The inclusion of the tree tops just takes this to another level.  Excellent vision with this one. Congrats!

Definitely understand that story and the image is close. Something just not quite tying the comp together imo.   Keep exploring this though!

I really love this, Kathy. I struggle to understand what I am seeing or imagine the landscape that would present this view, but that's part of the appeal.  I really like the textures and lines in the water.  I can imagine slight crop off the top, as someone else mentioned, but I like it as is.   Very well seen and very well done!

Kathy,

My first response is that I really, really ,like this image. The texture in the sand almost has a star like quality about it, and the placement of the trees is beautifully done. This image is so darn interesting, and I am diggin it!!!!!

An interesting (and slightly disorienting) take on the breaking surf, Kathy.  Those tree tops are a great foil to the surf in addition to challenging the viewer's perceptions.  Well seen!

I missed this.  Just Excellent Kathy! My only suggestion might be to clone out the smaller dark piece of flotsam in the lighter band towards the lower left. This image is too cool.
