Purple Finch-NH

I guess New Hampshire is already getting its share of attention right now, but this was about the last one I could fill in.  We used to get quite a few of the red finches (House, Cassin's and Purple) around here, particularly in the winter, but conditions seem to have changed and I haven't seen many lately.  I had to dig way back in my files to find one of these.  I posted another pose from the same session not long after I took it, but I'd never processed this one.

1D4, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4 TC, Jobu gimbal on Gitzo legs, f/10, 1/2000, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV (I was shooting Goldfinches at the time and those yellows blow our if you don't compensate).  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 6.25 MP before resizing.  I started with a 4x5 crop but it had too much empty space on the right, so I changed to the square.  Taken in our back yard at 7:35 pm on July 10th, 2011.

Comments are always welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,

I like everything about this one: the perch, contrasting background, and the great detail in the finch.devil

Hi Dennis,

I like this version better than your other shot of this particular bird--better image depth and the pose is much more interesting as well.  The composition is good with the triangular piece of log provided a nice base for the subject....................Jim

I like the pose of the finch, along with the good color and  perch.  Also the position of the head is a more interesting one, as compared to the post in Avian.  To me the BG looks a bit muddy, but that is just me.  Thanks for sharing.  Have not seen to many of these myself.

Dennis, it's a fine look at this finch, with an interesting pose on a good platform against a nice clean background.  The details in the larger version are truly fine.  When we first moved in here in MD 30 years ago, Purple Finches were one of the main visitors to our feeder.  Over years (and I think it's associated with local development), the Purple Finches have been largely replaced by House Finches.

I too like this more than the version in the Avian Gallery. The Raspberry colors almost glows in tihs.
