Pacific Madrone

One of our most beautiful trees, looking much like an oversized Rhododendron, but without as showy flowers.  The exfoliating bark is really cool and the fresh bark underneath varies from this golden brown to a deep red.

5D3, 180mm f/3.5L Macro, Arca Swiss Z1 Monoball on Gitzo 3441 legs, cable release, f/29, 5.0 sec, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Full frame.  I warmed up the color temperature a bit to bring out the golden tones in the bark as it was overcast at the time.

Comments and criticisms are appreciated.

Thanks,

Lovely color and texture. Nice soft light with just enough shadow to add dimension.

A fine look at this chunk of bark that looks likely to fly away on the next windy day.  The warm colors are very inviting and you set up a nice diagonal flow through the frame.

Reminiscent of some of the dried mud images I have seen. I like this because the color is unique to many trees.  The shapes are very pleasing and the detail is exceptional.

I just posted a Manzanita during its peeling stage. I knew that Madrone did the same, but they are entirely different genus; interesting. I like the color and textures in this. The top looks a little sparse, and to me, the star of the show is the curls. I'd suggest a crop from the top. Other than that, I think this looks nice.
