Inside-Out Douglas Fir

by Dennis Plank

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted March 9, 2016319 views11 comments
We had a fir come down last winter that I'd girdled a few years ago (There were a bunch of firs planted here before realizing it was supposed to be prairie, so we're removing some of them).  I was out feeding birds Saturday and saw the lovely beetle channels on the inside of a piece of the bark, so I gathered some up and took some images.  This is one of them.

5D3, 180mm f/3.5 L Macro, Arca Swiss Z1 Monoball on Gitzo 3441 legs, cable release, f/29, 0.3 sec, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Full frame.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

There's a subject you don't see very often.  Excellent patterns and abstract.

This is nice out-of-the-box thinking Dennis. Most of us are concentrating on the other side of the bark. Nice patterns with great color and detail.

I really enjoy beetle tracks, they make such interesting patterns (even as they kill a tree, sadly).  This is a great look at this set of tracks with some fine warm colors, Dennis.  I see Kokopelli as well as a great collection of interesting tracks.

Fascinating image...I like the rich tones throughout the grain, the beetle carvings are great.

Really like the rich tones.  Your image here could be considered beetle petroglyphs. Nice work.

Nice tracks! The central one looks like a spider. The patterns and textures are very nice. Well done!
