Pintail
by Luke Ormand
Recently I compiled a folder of my favorite "duck portrait" shots. I realized I was missing a few species and have been trying to tick off a few missing birds. Northern pintails are relatively rare on Long Island (when compared to other migratory ducks) and are usually not approachable nor found in intimate settings that allow for close viewing. However, this bird has been a regular at a preserve in a very developed area. A friend of mine lives just a few houses away and was able to give me some direction on finding the bird in a narrow stream on the side of a popular jogging path. I'm always amused when I have a close encounter with a species that I've struggled to get near in the past.
