Yosemite Valley Profile

Hey folks,

Very sorry I haven't been around in recent weeks.  Life, busy... all those things we go through.  Haven't been out much with the camera, although I might get up the motivation to post something in POP in the near future.

Talk about very simple, large negative space.  this is 4x5 image from a just over a year ago.  I was actually trying to recreate something I had shot in 35mm some 20 years prior.  Back then I was trying to shoot for stock and maybe even covers... hence all the room for text and titles.... (Like OP maybe???? - one could always hope, but then nothing gets published that never gets submitted.) Come full circle and Jim selected this as the title slide for the volume 3 of the "Why Nature Photography" Series.  Check it out if you haven't watched.

Well, just wanted to pop in and post an image.  Of course your comments and critiques are always welcom.

Thanks!

Lon

Lon,
This has a gorgeous gradient of colors in the sky. The patches of snow and larger tree silhouettes on the right add scale and some detail in the valley skyline. The profiles of Half Dome and El Cap are recognizable adding to the appeal. My sense is that this needs to be viewed really large to appreciate. I can see how this would make a great stock photo but I think it also has merit to stand on its own in a large print.

Real nice color gradient and colors and of course, one of the most classic skylines in the world.

Yeah, days need more than 24 hours, but what can you do? A great example of how powerful a simple comp can be, very nice. A really minor nit would be that the snow on the landscape is very slightly distracting, but no big deal at all. Splitting hairs here.... Nice job!

And since it is such a detail less sky, I did my best to find a dust bunny since you love them as much as I do, but dammit, none there...

A very simple but elegant composition. I'm wondering though, if we would appreciate this less if the features of Half Dome and El Cap weren't there or were unrecognizable.

Beautiful shot Lon.  Lovely colors and the shape of the mountains add a lot to this.

This just shows us how well simple comps can work. Wonderful gradient of beautiful color in this scene. Very nice work, Lon.

Half Dome makes this easily recognizable and the color gradient is perfect.  Well done.

What a fabulous sky!  I like the more distant view of half-dome too, something we don't often see.  I can imagine a vertical crop as well (including the small butte on the right, but not its saddle), which would lend itself to a magazine or book cover as well.

Just a gorgeous color palette, the gradient is really well done.
The silhouette works also for me with the details that can be seen. A minor tweak for me would be to lighten the
snow even more and remove the blue caste a bit..

Just enough detail here to make this recognizable. Nice sky. A lot of color that I typically don't see from you but I really like it.
