Floodplains Textures

I found this scene last week rambling through National Park Danube Floodplains in Lower Austria. The mixture of elements arranged in these layers was amazing to me.

Comments and critique are appreciated.

So many non-nature photographers might see this and think "Big deal, that's just some saplings" but it's really so much more.  This is a beautiful image and the composition works very nicely.  The subtle greens provide that little splash of color that makes the image work so well.  I'm really enjoying this.

This is good, really good. I like the concept. Many come up with such compositions but to get it really well is not that common. The far large trees rising out of the smaller trees is one of the elements that makes this special. The other is the front trees coming out of the grass. Everything is vertical, overlaying one another. Several ideas: 1) because detail is so important here a large version could really make a big difference. I don't feel the full impact is felt. 2) I would saturate the warm orange/yellow colors of the grass at the very bottom. 3) If there is more image at the bottom I would give the very bottom grass/shrubs have more room rather than having some trunks run to the frame. I'm not entirely sure about #3 but I suspect that may be beneficial.

As soon as I saw this I thought it must be one of Peter's! No one seems to do these like you do. This comp works so well and it is easy to see that you put your thoughts and feelings into it. I love the subtle colors just as they are here and all the fine detail in this image is just wonderful. The higher quality view is especially nice to explore. Excellent work Peter! Nick

I like the texture and the design made by the white bark of what it seems to be birch.

Very well executed.  There's just enough of the larger trees to break.up the texture of the smaller ones.

Peter,

Many of us here, especially me, LOVE these scenes and images. We often seek them out.  From the ordinary, comes something special.

While I understand, and don't disagree, that the bg trees work well in the scene, for me I might try cropping from the top and left and just concentrate on the 3 primary saplings.  Their bare white trunks are easily separated from the rest of the little branches and grass and would make a nice, alternate comp. I do agree about the bottom grass/vegetation, especially the emerging greens.

No matter how you slice this one, it's well scene and a great example of seeing something most folks would pass on, AND making order from chaos.

Well done.

Lon

I'm thinking that I prefer it as presented, Peter, even after reading the other comments. Would be fun to explore monochrome possibilities.

This is so very nice! The controlled chaos of all the small branches looks amazing, and the shapes of the bigger stems with those branches as a background is very sweet. A winner!
