Red-winged Blackbird

I suspect from the pale color of this guy's epaulet's that he's not at the top of the pecking order and his song display was pretty anemic as well, but he did provide me with a nice close view and a lovely bg.

7D2, Sigma 150-600 C @ 516 mm, bean bag on car window, f/6.3, 1/1600, iso 800, aperture priority, pattern metering, +1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 4x5 aspect ration, just a tiny bit off the vertical dimension.  Taken at Ridgefield NWR at 7:11 AM on April 20th.

Comments and criticisms are really appreciated.

Thanks,

Nice job, Dennis.  I like the singing pose and the epaulet's are flared a bit.  Classic perch and sweet background.  Looks like the techs were just right as the blacks show a nice detail.  Your photos with the Sigma lens convinced me to pick one up and I got a pretty good deal at the recent NPPNW meeting.  So far I'm liking it and any problems seem to reflect the photographer and not the lens.

Hi Dennis,

This turned out fairly well. The bill is a little soft due to the open f-stop used for the shot. Otherwise, nice pose and comp................Jim

Nice detail in the blacks and reds look to be the correct color.  Love the background.

Great pose, perch and setting. What did you do to make him pose like this enlightened ? But, on a serious note, I love it! Cheers, hans

The sound of spring.  Nicely captured.  I like the singing pose, simple perch and clean complimentary background.  I have difficulty exposing these guys properly, especially against a light background, but this looks good.

Well done Dennis. Did a fairly good job on the blacks on the upper part of the bird and the shadows of the middle part of the bird do cut some of the detail but I don't think there's anything you could do about that.  The color is really nice in the background is great.

Excellent composition Dennis.  Enjoying the light, color, background, and animation of this bird.  It looks a bit soft in the large version, so maybe a bit of selective sharpening would help.
