Owl Gaze

I've been in Missoula, Montana for the last few days, at the start of a 5-week training to learn a new parachute system. It's been pretty stressful and the days are long, but when I went for a walk one evening and noticed that several great horned owl fledglings were hopping around on the ground and practicing flying, I ran back to get my camera gear. When I approached them, all the chicks  flew up into a nearby tree, but one decided to stay put and stare me down instead. It was getting pretty dark outside, so I had to use a higher ISO and lower depth of field than I would have liked, but I'm happy with the power of the image.

All C & C appreciated

That is a pretty cool look.  I like the comp and the intense look in the eyes.  Nicely seen and captured.

Very fun image. This is one brave little owl to stick around and stare you down. The eyes are fantastic, and I like the comp with the fading feathers going back from the eyes. Great one!

Oh yes, a man after my own heart!  As an owl lover, this is just great.  Very sharp where it needs to be and the tight crop really adds to that dramatic stare that only owls can give.  Interestingly, the reflection of the you and your background is slightly different in each eye--probably due to the slight angular difference from your position.  A great dramatic capture--well done!

Sweet image, Thomas, with lots of energy and impact.  Excellent hand holding to get this detail at 1/40 sec.  Iso 1250 is just fine with that camera.

Given the specs (slow shutter, fairly wide open), I think this looks really good.  Pretty impressed that you pulled it off.  I would've bumped to 3200 immediately. enlightened

Pretty sweet image! I really like the DOF, it keeps the focus on the eyes and really helps the image "pop". Great comp!
