Canon 5d Mark ii.  Tamron 150-600 at 400.  1/40, f7.1  Handheld.  This is a montage, i.e. the little guy was perched in a tree but the tangled branches of it were too busy so I gave it another bgd.  My first sighting of this species.  I was esp taken by that elegant long white feather down its back.  Luckily it sat there for quite awhile and since its back was to me I was able to take several shots.

Nice job on the montage, Lucy, and a great job of hand holding at that shutter speed.  You don't mention your iso, but if you could have bumped it up and gotten either more shutter speed or more  dof, I think the image would have worked a bit better.  The Heron seems sharp around the face, but starts to get pretty soft on the sides and back.

Hi Lucy,
When I was looking at this photo my first thought was "wow you must have been close, that is a neat wide angle shot".  Then I read your techs and description of having shot it at 400mm and changed the background.  I have moved it to the photo art gallery as I think that is a more appropriate gallery for it.  By the way if you had been able to include the whole body I think that may have made it even stronger.  As it is I quite like the image, he seems to be surveying his property.  devil
