Nursing Hyena

Kind of a fun shot from my recent South Africa tour.  We were fortunate to watch an active spotted hyena den site right near the road in Kruger National Park.  These are probably the smallest pups I've seen to date.  At that age, they're still rather cute (later in life, not so much!), and it was nice to see some of the interaction between the wee ones and the adults.  My angle from the vehicle provided a nice opportunity to capture a bit of nursing action, enhanced by a toothy yawn from momma.

Yes, a very "interesting" view, with the nursing pup looking past mom's wide open jaws.

Cute little pup.  He looks a bit afraid of mom, though.  I don't blame him.

Hi Max, a cool capture and although perhaps not planned, I do very much like the 'V' shape of the open jaw almost channeling the viewer to the pup. Having the open eye and shot wide open really draws the viewer in. Nicely framed and having Mom's hint of ear in was a good call. Love the partial expression of the pup.

With the 1DX you will consistently nail the images, forgetting about ISO and retaining a fast SS, it's a joy, long gone are the days of slow SS.
