I picked up a couple of pots of these a month ago and the blossoms immediately senesced.  They finally recovered from the move and are starting to put out new blooms.  Yesterday seemed like a good day to try photographing the current bloom.

5DIII, 180 mm f/3.5L, tripod with cable release, f/22, 1/25, iso 500, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1 EV.  Shadow provided by my body.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Taken at 10:29 AM yesterday.

Comments and criticisms would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Dennis. I like the off center comp and vivid red color. Very eye-catching floral image. I also like the detail in the center. In general, if I have to choose between front-center focus and center-back focus, I prefer front-center so as to avoid oof fronts. Purely subjective/personal preference. Well done either way. crying

I like the color and the details in the rear of the bloom, Dennis.  I think that I would lose the 'v' of green on the right.  I have tried plenty of times to put the focus back farther in the frame as you did here, but I have had largely the same results.  I think the OOF area in the front of the bloom hurts the shot a bit overall.

Hi Dennis, I agree with Nathan and Scott about the OOF front and the green 'V'. Since the basic comp is good a closer crop would suffice. Colour and detail in the in focus areas is great with just the right amount of detail coming out of the shadow in the center of the flower.

Beautiful Valentino' red. I like the lateral composition that gives a dynamic feeling. I too prefer the back OOF. I love the photo.

Thanks, Folks.  I really appreciate the feedback on this.  I'll have to work on some more images of this flower.

Beautiful red without being "too" red.  The focus on the in-focus part is great, and I really like the softness of the petals to the right.

Dennis: Ditto the comments regarding the green wedge but this DOF/POF works for me as an unconventional rendition. Great reds management. >=))>
