Looks like an adult Ferruginous Hawk to me Jerry, nice to get one perched up in a tree like this, good comp, I like the one out of place feather. devil

Beautiful bird, fine detail, great perch.
If possible, a tighter crop, leaving out some of the lower tree fork, would allow a better view of this beauty.
Very nice work!

Beautiful colors, composition and detail.  The colors of the bird and the colors of the perch are really eye-catching.

Excellent, Jerry.   I'm not the birder Nate is, but I was looking at my guides when you posted this and came to the same conclusion.  Detail is very good and I think this would support a bit of a crop from the bottom as Sandy suggests.

Jerry, when did you take this shot?

If it's indeed a Ferruginous (looks different from the Rough-legged hawks that appear in winter), that's a pretty rare find for Yellowstone.

Max, I took the image on Sept 13th (about three weeks ago). He was in the Lamar Valley. I have never seen a raptor like this in any of my previous trip.
